Spain 0 Switzerland 1 (16th June, 2010)

Switzerland provided the first shock of the World Cup by beating tournament favourites Spain 1-0. What made the upset bigger was that Spain pretty much dominated the whole game. The only goal came in the 52nd minute. The Swiss attacker Gelson Fernandes got hold of a long ball and managed to get past several Spanish defenders and goalkeeper Iker Casillas to bundle the ball into the back of the net. This was totally against the run of play. Spain had their chances but never turned their possession into goals. After a goalless first half, it looked like Spain would step up a gear. David Villa, Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta all went close, with Alonso firing a rocket of a shot against the bar. Spain have a lot of work to do now. No team has ever lost an opening game and then become champions.
