Uruguay 1 (4) Ghana 1 (2) (2nd July, 2010)

Uruguay booked their place in the semi-finals by winning a penalty shoot-out. They ended Ghana’s hope of becoming the first African side ever to reach the last four. It was heartbreak for the Ghanaians as striker Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty in what was the last kick of the game in extra time. It was an exciting, often bad-tempered match. Both sides missed many good chances. Ghana opened the scoring at the end of the first half. Sulley Muntari fired in an unstoppable shot from 40 metres. Diego Forlan equalized for Uruguay from a free-kick ten minutes after the break. It looked like Ghana would go through when Luis Suarez was red-carded for handling on the line in the last minute of extra time. Gyan’s kick rebounded off the crossbar and the referee blew the whistle to end the game. Gyan held his nerve to put the first of the penalties away, but that wasn’t enough as his team-mates missed three to put Uruguay through.
