Spain 1 Portugal 0 (29th June, 2010)

A very close match ended in the European champions' favour, although it could have gone either way. Spain are slowly coming to life in this tournament, although the poor form of striker Fernando Torres must be a concern for the Spanish. Portugal missed a string of chances in the first half. Cristiano Ronaldo twice tested ‘keeper Iker Casillas from long range-free kicks. Casillas also did well to stop a powerful shot from Tiago and raced to beat Hugo Almeida to a ball that was goal-bound. Spain’s David Villa broke the deadlock after the break with his 63rd-minute winner – his fourth goal of the tournament. They applied more pressure after the goal and Portugal had no answer to Spain’s slick passing and possession football. Portugal’s Ricardo Costa was sent off late in the game but things were already settled by then.
