Slovakia 3 Italy 2 (24th June, 2010)

World Champions Italy are out of the World Cup. They were well beaten by a determined Slovakia team who had more desire and ability to win. The loss leaves Italy bottom of their group, the same as France, who Italy beat in the last Final. Italy were a shadow of the side that lifted the trophy in 2006. Their defense, usually an art for Italians, was non-existent. It was an incredibly exciting game. Slovakia captain Robert Vittek scored his country’s first two goals, both the result of sloppy defending. The Italians looked dead and buried. On came Italian substitute Andrea Pirlo midway through the second half and Italy started playing. They pulled one back through Antonio di Natale on 81 minutes before Slovakia’s Kamil Kopnek restored his team’s two-goal lead. There was still time in extra time for Fabio Quagliarella to get a second for Italy, but it was too late.
