Netherlands 2 Slovakia 1 (28th June, 2010)

A very solid performance from the Netherlands was enough to see them through to the quarter-finals. Arjen Robben opened the scoring with a coolly taken strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. He picked up a beautiful diagonal cross-field pass from Wesley Sneijder and cut inside two defenders to make space for his shot. Slovakia camped inside their own half for the first hour of the game, making it difficult for the Dutch attack to get through on goal. They had their first shots on goal after 67 minutes, forcing two great saves from the Dutch ‘keeper. The Netherlands made the game safe in the 83rd minute when Sneijder slotted the ball into an empty net. Slovakia did get one back when Robert Vittek scored from the penalty spot with the last kick of the match.
