Greece 2 Nigeria 1 (17th June, 2010)

Greece came from behind to secure a valuable first win in Bloemfontein. The 2-1 victory means Nigeria is the first team to exit from the 2010 World Cup. It was Nigeria who opened the scoring on 16 minutes with Uche’s free-kick. The Super Eagles were in control until Sani Kaita was sent off in the 33rd minute for kicking a Greek player. Greece took full advantage of playing against 10 men and immediately went on the attack. A deflection from Dimitrios Salpingidis’ shot drew his side level just before half time. Greece pushed for the winner after the break. Vasilis Torosidis got the winner after 77 minutes to set up a thrilling finale. Nigeria had their chances in the closing stages but failed to take them. Greece held on to secure their first ever World Cup win.
