Denmark 1 Japan 3 (24th June, 2010)

Japan brought back the art of scoring free-kicks to the World Cup with two stunning strikes from distance. They were two up inside half an hour and the Danes didn’t know what hit them. The first was a 30-metre screamer from Daisuke Honda which rocketed over the wall and swerved past goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen into the far corner. A pick for goal of the tournament. The second was from Yasuhito Endo - an absolutely beautifully curled free-kick around the Danish wall. With their two-goal advantage, Japan went looking for a third and totally outplayed the Europeans. Early in the second half Endo nearly scored from another set piece – a 40-metre effort that slipped through Sorensen’s hands and hit the post. Denmark got a goal back through Jon Dahl Tomasson on 87 minutes only for Japan to put the game to bed with a Shinji Okazaki goal three minutes before time.
