READING:

A school has apologised to over 50 students for punishing them after they wore the wrong trousers. Pupils at the school in the north of England got detention for not following school uniform rules. They spent around eight hours in a small classroom for breaking the rules. School bosses said many of the trousers were "skintight" and so they were not the right dress for school. The head teacher explained that the school was tightening its uniform rules. She said she had not expected students to wear so many different types of trousers. She admitted the school had been too strict with the students.

Parents were very angry at how the school treated their children. A mother told reporters: "[My daughter] was in that room for eight hours yesterday and she was deeply distressed." She said her daughter was not badly behaved and was punished for a pair of trousers the teachers did not like. She said her daughter's trousers were not "skintight", as the school had said. She added that her daughter lost two days' education and called the rule "ridiculous". The mother said the school sent her a letter to say students should wear black "tailored" trousers but should have been "more specific".
