The Reading / Listening - Level 4

The wife of Oman's foreign minister is suing London's high-class The Ritz hotel for losing money at its casino. Nora Al-Daher lost nearly $3.5-million in just a few hours. The 50-year-old multi-millionaire said it was the casino's fault that she lost because they knew she had a gambling problem. She told the judge: "I needed someone that night to tell me to stop playing and bring me to my senses. If I had been told to stop, of course I would have done so."

Ms Al-Daher had already lost a "significant" amount of money that evening at other casinos. The Ritz sued her after her cheques were not honoured. Al-Daher said she has been a gambling addict since 1999. She lost over $10 million at The Ritz in three years. Her lawyer said casino staff urged her to lose money, saying: "Staff positively encouraged her…saying, 'Anything for you.…No problem....The next time you will get your money back'."
