Researchers say that people who dress differently get more respect. Silvia Bellezza and two professors looked at how we view the status and competence of people who do not dress "normally". They found that the more strangely people dress, the more respect they get. People thought that those with "weirder" fashion were more unique. Many people believe that dressing down is a sign of confidence. Bellezza said: "If you're willing to deviate, there are upsides."

Bellezza's experiments tested how people reacted to non-standard dress. People dressed differently at boutiques in Milan. One group wore sports clothes, while the other dressed in suits. Sales assistants thought the sporty people were the bigger spenders. In another test, students rated an unshaven professor in a T-shirt above a professor in a suit. Well-known CEOs who dress down and wear jeans and sneakers may have changed how we think.
