The Reading / Listening - Level 1

A third of women in the European Union have experienced violence. A survey on human rights found that 62 million women over the age of 15 have experienced violence. The EU talked to 42,000 women about violence at home and at work. The women spoke about rape, stalking, sexual harassment and online bullying. Around 22 per cent of women had violent husbands or boyfriends. Around 67 per cent of women did not report domestic violence to the police.

The EU wants new laws to protect women. They want to make domestic violence a crime. Police in many countries cannot stop domestic violence. The survey's author said violence against women is a big human rights abuse in all EU countries. He said people must understand this problem affects everyone, saying. "Violence against women…impacts on society every day." He also said there was a link between alcohol and violence.
