Indian repatriates 3,700 prisoners in UAE (5th July, 2013)

An Indian businessman in the United Arab Emirates has helped send home nearly 3,700 prisoners from various nations in UAE jails. They had finished their time in prison but had no money to pay their debts or buy an air ticket home. Firoz G. Merchant, 54, owner of a jewellery company, spent about $1,000,000 to free the men. He plans to help another 1,000 men later this year. Merchant said he only helps prisoners with unpaid debts.

Do-gooder Mr Merchant said the poor UAE economy in 2010 motivated him. Thousands of builders lost their jobs and had many debts from loans, credit cards and rent. He said: "There were a lot of people behind bars….It opened my eyes that this is my duty." He wanted them to go home for Ramadan because it is the month for giving. He said: "I want to put greater effort into getting these prisoners back...and reunited with their families."
