Togo to Quit African Cup after Fatal ShootingThe Togo football team is to quit the African Cup of Nations tournament following the deadly ambush of their bus on January the 8th. The attack on the Togo team took place in the north of Angola. The team’s assistant coach, their press officer and the bus driver were killed in the ambush. Many players and team officials were injured, some seriously. Rebels sprayed the bus with bullets for 20 minutes. The Togo government has ordered the team to leave Angola. Many players wanted to stay and play in honour of their assistant coach. However, captain Emmanuel Adebayor of English Premier League side Manchester City said: "We are children of Togo and we will abide by the decision of our government.” Togo has accused Angola, the host nation of the competition, of failing to protect the players. The Togolese government has asked Angola to explain why it was not warned of the dangers of travelling in northern Angola. Angolan officials have rejected Togo’s criticisms. They said all teams were advised to travel only by air. They expressed their astonishment that Togo’s team travelled by road from their base in the Republic of Congo. The Angolan government called the incident an "act of terrorism". They blamed the attack on militants who are fighting for independence. Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou has guaranteed greater security for the competition, which started on January the 10th. WARM-UPS1.
