Japanese food to get UNESCO status (27th October, 2013)

Japanese food is called 'Washoku'. It will be on the U.N. list of important world cuisines. French, Mediterranean, Mexican and Turkish food is on this list. 'Washoku' is very varied. It looks like art. All Japanese food will be on the list, not just sushi, noodles, tempura and sukiyaki, etc. 'Washoku' uses special ingredients.

'Washoku' is very healthy and balanced. It helps Japanese people live a long life. Special meals bring families together in Japan. There is different food for the four seasons. New Year's Day, rice-planting and harvest festivals all have special food. Food helps Japanese people keep their culture. It is also linked to a respect for nature.
