4,000 could die building Qatar World Cup (29th September, 2013)

An international worker's group (the ITUC) is worried about the working conditions of builders in Qatar. The workers get low pay for dangerous work. Sometimes companies do not pay them and take away their passports. The men get no drinking water, even when it is 50 degrees. This summer, 44 Nepalese workers died. Most of them died from heart attacks or workplace accidents. The ITUC says that 4,000 workers could die before the World Cup starts in 2022.

Many people are shocked about the treatment of workers. The ITUC said it is like modern slavery. Nepal's ambassador to Qatar said Qatar was like "an open jail" for workers. The Anti-Slavery International group said companies are using slave labour. Qatar's government is shocked. It said no worker in Qatar should work like this. It said the health and safety of every worker helping the 2022 FIFA World Cup is very, very important.
