THE ARTICLESaudi Arabia’s King Fahd died on Monday. He had been in bad health since suffering a stroke ten years ago. His half-brother Crown Prince Abdullah has been announced as the new monarch. He has controlled the kingdom for the past ten years. The King’s funeral will take place today and will be attended by many of the world’s leaders. King Fahd had very close links with President Bush’s family and was once a good friend of Saddam Hussein. Things changed when the King allowed the U.S. army to use Saudi Arabia as a base in the two wars against Iraq. King Fahd was 84 years old. His health had worsened since being admitted to hospital on May 27. The Saudi Information Minister announced the news of the King’s death on state television: “With deep sorrow and pain, the Royal Court mourns the death of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd.” He will also be mourned around the Islamic world. Pakistan will hold an official period of mourning to last one week. The Arab League Secretary General said the King was a true visionary who played an important role in the Middle East. WARM-UPS1. SAUDI CITIZEN: You are a citizen of Saudi Arabia. Walk around the classroom and talk with the other “citizens” of your country about the death of your king. What does it mean for your kingdom? How will his death change your life? 2. SAUDI SEARCH: Your job is to find out as much information as you can in five minutes about Saudi Arabia and King Fahd. Ask as many students as you can (and your teacher) for information. Once the five minutes is up, sit down with your partner(s). Share and talk about what you found out. Discuss what information was new, interesting, worrying, pleasing etc. What information are you happy you found out? 3. CHAT: In pairs / groups, decide which of these topics or words are most interesting and which are most boring.
Have a chat about the topics you liked. For more conversation, change topics and partners frequently. 4. FUNERAL: Spend one minute writing down all of the different words you associate with the word “funeral”. Share your words with your partner(s) and talk about them. Together, put the words into different categories. 5. A KING’S LIFE: Would you like to be a king (or queen)? In pairs / groups, answer this question. Discuss what you think life as a Saudi King is like. Some of the following words may be useful in your conversations:
